Then when I want the spell to begin or come alive, I would undo one knot at a time. For example, I want it to snow, so I open the spell with the words: By the knot of one this spells is begun, and I name you frost, second knot is sleet, third knot is hail, fourth knot is light snow, fifth knot is snow, sixth knot is heavy snow, seventh knot is blizzard, eight knot is snow storm and the ninth knot is cloud burst. As I tie the nine knots, each one is given a name. For example, if I wanted snow I would use a white ribbon. The spell caster ties nine knots in a piece of colour coordinated ribbon. Thus was born ribbon magic, often referred to the spell of nine knots and extremely ancient. One item that was readily available was string, or ribbon, something that was used to bind and was symbolic of binding your will to the spell. The next part the novice had to learn was how to weave these into magic and intent. Gold: money, wealth, sun, happiness and contentment Orange: ambition, career matters, and the law Silver: clairvoyance, inspiration, astral energy and intuition Purple: material wealth, higher psychic ability, spiritual power and idealism Green: fertility, abundance, good luck, harmony, and moneyīlue: inspiration, occult wisdom, protection, devotion and rain Yellow: intellectual, imagination, creativity, memory and the sun Red: health, energy, strength, courage, sexual potency, heat, and fire Here is the first list of correspondences: Such was its power of relaxation that it can help to put the user in a meditative state and therefore, it became used in rituals of divination and psychic awareness. For example, the herb lavender has predominantly blue/purple flowers and lavender became known as a great healer plant, and in particular a calming, relaxing plant, no doubt due to its heady aroma. The novice had to learn what each colour meant, usually from looking all around them in nature and then connecting them to other correspondences. The five elements are: earth, air, fire, water and spirit (or the divine). The five elements of witchcraft are absolutely paramount in spells, magic and how we generally live. It is for this reason that the very first magic was of the element of earth. Their development primarily originated from nature itself very similar to the magic that embraced them. They are the beginning of what we now call the correspondences, and these lie at the heart of magic and the Craft. These meanings of colour developed centuries ago and was often viewed in awe. For example, we instinctively know now that pink is often connected to love, and red is passion, but how did we know that and where does this knowledge stem from? If we look at our stores covered in Valentine’s Day cards they are a mass of reds and pinks, or Easter cards are predominantly yellow with fresh spring green. The first lesson was learning the meaning of colours. The novice or neophyte witch had to learn to master this first, and then proceeded to candle magic. Along with the candle spell, the oldest spell known is that which concerns string or ribbon magic. The other old form, which we shall look at next month, is one which uses candles and fire. One of the oldest forms of magic and spell-weaving was that of ribbon magic or colour magic.

The Linux kernel implementation, for example, is starting on the periphery by supporting Rust-based drivers, the programs that coordinate between an operating system and hardware like a printer. Writing new software in Rust doesn't address that massive backlog. One of the biggest challenges of the transition to Rust, though, is precisely all the decades that developers have already spent writing vital code in memory-unsafe languages. Continuing to use memory-unsafe code for another decade would be a massive problem for the tech industry, for national security, for everything.” “There are no real alternatives right now, other than not doing anything, and that’s just not an option anymore. “It’s less that it’s the right choice and more that it’s ready,” Lorenc, a longtime open-source contributor and researcher, says. But proponents emphasize that Rust has the necessary elements-it doesn't cause performance loss, and it interoperates well with software written in other languages-and that it is crucial simply because it meets a dire need. The effort over the last two years to implement Rust in Linux has been controversial, partly because adding support for any other language inherently increases complexity, and partly because of debates about how, specifically, to go about making it all work. Rust is not without its skeptics and detractors. These are known as “out-of-bounds” read and write bugs, and you can see how they could potentially be exploited to give an attacker improper access to data or even expanded system control. And if you add a birthday party to your calendar on November 42, it may overwrite unrelated data in memory instead of telling you that it can't complete the task. But if the program isn't designed with the right constraints, and you request entries for November 42, 2022, the software, instead of producing an error or other failure, may dutifully return information from a part of the memory that's housing different data-maybe the password you use to protect your calendar or the credit card number you keep on file for premium calendar features. You open your calendar and then request entries for November 2, 2022, and the program fetches all information from the area of your computer's memory assigned to store that date’s data. Imagine a calendar program written in a language that isn't memory-safe. By writing new software in Rust instead, even amateur programmers can be confident that they haven't introduced any memory-safety bugs into their code.Ī program's memory is a shared resource used by all of its features and libraries. When programmers use stalwart languages that don't have this property, including C and C++, they have to carefully check the parameters of what data their program is going to be requesting and how-a task that even the most skilled and experienced developers will occasionally botch. Rust is what's known as a “memory-safe” language because it's designed to make it impossible for a program to pull unintended data from a computer's memory accidentally. And after a couple of years of intensive work, the Linux kernel took its first steps last month to implement Rust support. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services have all been utilizing Rust since 2019, and the three companies formed the nonprofit Rust Foundation with Mozilla and Huawei in 2020 to sustain and grow the language. But because Rust produces more secure code and, crucially, doesn't worsen performance to do it, the language has been steadily gaining adherents and now is at a turning point. Meanwhile, the predecessor language C, which is still widely used today, turned 50 this year. Now 12 years old, Rust took time to mature from the side project of a Mozilla researcher into a robust ecosystem. There are fads in programming languages, and new ones come and go, often without lasting impact. By design, developers can't accidentally create the most common types of exploitable security vulnerabilities when they're coding in Rust, a distinction that could make a huge difference in the daily patch parade and ultimately the world's baseline cybersecurity. But a growing movement to write software in a language called Rust is gaining momentum because the code is goof-proof in an important way. People make mistakes, so code is inevitably going to contain mistakes-you get it. Whether you run IT for a massive organization or simply own a smartphone, you're intimately familiar with the unending stream of software updates that constantly need to be installed because of bugs and security vulnerabilities. Berserk Button: Don't insult her or her methods, and never mess with her charges.Bag of Holding: Her magical carpet bag easily contains multiple objects way too big and heavy for a normal bag. It's worth noting that in the books one her cousins is a giant talking snake.Basically, she stands out in a crowd and she can do things that no one else in the story can do and nobody knows why. Ambiguously Human: Besides the fact that Mary can do things that normal humans wouldn’t be able to do (such as being able to travel via the wind, defy the laws of physics and being a Weirdness Magnet), Mary’s behaviour tends to be rather strange compared to other people in the story. She offers no explanation and stops any attempt to raise the subject. Here’s a look back at some of Van Dyke’s most iconic performances in “Mary Poppins.” The Oscar-winning classic film was a vast showcase for Van Dyke’s singing and dancing skills. “Probably the role in “Mary Poppins’ was the most fun I ever had,” he said. In an interview with CNN, Van Dyke once said “Mary Poppins” was his favorite role in his six-decade career. One of his most beloved roles was in the 1964 movie “Mary Poppins,” in which he played dual roles as jack-of-all-trades Bert the chimney sweep, as well as the role of bank chairman Mr. The movie and television legend’s career was showcased as he accepted the honor along with fellow honorees Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, and Midori.Īt age 95, Van Dyke boasts a long resume in the entertainment industry, dating back to the late 1950s, per IMDB. While at a place called Gondal, near what is today known as Mumbai, he caught a cold… and died!Īn ardent scholar, a multifaceted individual, a charming party-goer, a legend in his own field, Douglas Moray Argyll Robertson is my choice for the Doctor of the Month for July! He moved to the Island of Jersey in 1904 and in 1908 made a trip to India. He also has an Indian connection, albeit, in a rather dubious manner! Following his retirement from active hospital service in 1897, he had not been keeping in the best of health. He was a champion archer and was an honorary member of the Royal Company of Archers, who were the body guards of the Queen in Scotland. Even though it was recreation, however, he brought to it the same skill he had as a surgical operator, winning the gold medal of the Royal and Ancient Club of St. He attributed his good health to golf and considered it the finest recreation in the world. “His handsome features and his tall, athletic frame made him the cynosure of all female eyes in his youth and in his later years, clad in a grey frock-coat and top hat, his dignified manner combined with his genial old-world courtesy made him conspicuous in any assembly and a magnificent ambassador of Scotland, firmly establishing that country in the social world of ophthalmology. Within the rigid orthodox boundaries of Victorian England, he was quite the party animal. If only there were more teachers like him nowadays!īut, Argyll Robertson was not just some eye doctor who wielded the scalpel with precision and towered over his colleagues and contemporaries in stature. In fact, in today’s publish-or-perish world, there are pre-med students with more publications than him! He was more of a teacher and believed in the power of the demonstrated lecture as a didactic tool over pages of erudite expression. He was one of the most respected surgeons of his day. He chaired the Ophthalmologic Society of England for 12 straight years from 1883. This remarkable physician was also the Royal Ophthalmologist to none other than Queen Victoria herself (1886). The true spirit of science! (OK, I can already see the IRBs and IECs looking daggers at me!)Īnother important contribution of Argyll Robertson was the fact that he also was one of the first physicians to describe the condition of Ocular Loaiasis. Oh, and the real cool thing about the whole business was that he had experimented upon himself and had found the miotic properties of the compound. His preceptor, von Graefe, used physostigmine to perform iridectomy in a patient in the very same year he discovered it. He correctly fore told that this group of chemicals were going to become of paramount importance in the treatment of ocular conditions. One of the largest came in 1863, he discovered the miotic properties of Physostigmine from the calabar bean. It was not the norm of the day since most people chose to go into Medicine or Surgery rather than solely in the then rather limited field of Ophthalmology.īesides this eponymous condition, which had guaranteed him immortality in medical circles, he has had several other important contributions to the discipline. The son of a surgeon with special interest in Ophthalmology, he completed his medical education at the very young age of 20 years and immediately forayed into the field of Ophthalmology. He was one of the first surgeons to specialize exclusively in Ophthalmology. This condition was named after Douglas Moray Argyll Robertson, who published 2 papers to describe this condition in 1869. Now to come to the interesting parts of the Eponym for the condition. In general, pupils that “accommodate but do not react” are said to show light-near dissociation. This condition is colloquially referred to as the “Whore’s Eye” because of the association with tertiary syphilis and because of the convenient mnemonic that, like a prostitute, they “accommodate but do not react” also because the pupils are “small and irregular.” They are a highly specific sign of neurosyphilis. Argyll Robertson pupils (“AR pupils”) are bilateral small pupils that constrict when the patient focuses on a near object (they “accommodate”), but do not constrict when exposed to bright light (they do not “react” to light). Arranging a Sequence diagram keeps the relative positions of all the elements, but reduces any unneeded vertical or horizontal spaces. Most of the specific features and restrictions of sequence diagrams compared to other diagrams derive from this strong guarantee that at all time, the graphical (vertical) order of the elements you see on the diagram match exactly the semantic order of the events which exist in the underlying model.įor this reason, the Arrange All command in Sirius, which launches an automatic layout of all the elements on a diagram, is specific for sequence diagrams. This is very different from what happens in other diagrams, where most graphical repositioning of elements are only cosmetic. He just has to map the concepts of interaction from the elements of his domain model to the graphical elements of a sequence diagram (see Specifier guide).Ĭontrary to what happens on a classical diagram, the relative graphical positions of elements on a Sequence diagram have strong meaning. Thanks to this component, the developer of a graphical modeling tool can easily provide a sequence diagram to its users. With a tool created with Sirius, a user can design complex systems (software, business activities, physics, etc.) while keeping the corresponding data consistent (architecture, component properties, etc.).Īmong the many benefits of using Sirius is the fact that it provides a component dedicated to sequence diagrams (see User Guide). In Capella, most of the diagrams are developed with Eclipse Sirius, an open-source solution developed by Obeo and Thales that enables you to create custom graphical modeling tools dedicated to specific areas of expertise. Mainly by optimizing the generic Sequence Diagram component provided by Eclipse Sirius and used in Capella. In one case, this issue was faced by one of our main customers, a Chinese leading company in systems engineering services.Īs we will explain through this blog post, on the latest Capella 5.0 release, the Obeo team, in coordination with Thales, worked on several optimizations to improve the performance of Sequence Diagrams. As a result, Sequence diagrams are large data sets that grow continuously throughout the years.ĭue to their important size, users encountered performance problems when opening and modifying Sequence Diagrams. The fact is that Sequence diagrams are advanced Capella features mainly used on very large-scale complex systems.

Or you could use Bridge from Adobe which is free. You could build yourself a free-account Airtable base and store your metadata there. You could use Apple (or Windows 10) Photos. So if you like its editing tools, you'll still be looking for some other way to keep track of your photos so you can find 'em later. But to say that PhotoLab isn't "as good" as Lightroom as a library manager is misleading. For that purpose it's very good: about as good as Lightroom for most things, somewhat better or somewhat worse than Lightroom for a few other things. PhotoLab is basically it's a single-image editing app. But this is why I have NEVER used DxO software as my primary photo handling app. I have been using DxO software (Optics Pro since almost version 1 and now PhotoLab). No keywords, no albums, no captions, no image titles, no face or content recognition (Apple Photos does faces, Lightroom CC does content), no support for geotags, and basically no find feature. Ability to use star or flag to earmark favourite imagesĪs I have said before: PhotoLab is NOT a photo-library management app. I suspect I'll stop using PhotoLab but will move images that require serious correction into ViewPoint. On the other hand, the perspective correction tools in Lightroom CC are now nearly as good. If you need perspective correction you have to buy the DxO "suite" which includes ViewPoint (or buy ViewPoint in addition to PhotoLab) and you'll now be paying what a couple years of Lightroom CC would cost you. Highlight/shadow corrections in PhotoLab on the other hand are very very good. The brush tools in Lightroom are much easier to use and equally or more effective. But the U-point tools in PhotoLab are - like DxO's "color wheel" - NOT intuitive or easy to use. I loved the Nik Collection and used it enthusiastically for years. The U-point tools work okay, but I think they worked better in the original Nik suite of tools. Local corrections are a new thing in DxO's products and are most of what led them to rename Optics Pro (which didn't have local corrections) "PhotoLab". The clone/heal in PhotoLab isn't nearly as good as the corresponding tool in Lightroom CC. Ability to recover highlight and shadow detail Clone/heal to get rid of imperfections in shot (litter on ground etc) PhotoLab's features are described in a fair bit of detail here: The website seems quite sketchy about the program's features, so I was wondering whether people here who know both could clarify if DXO includes the following: If your financial situation is such that a bit more than $100 a year is a hardship, well, don't switch to something that costs MORE but gives you a permanent license (DxO Photo Suite) - switch to something free. But if the app that works best has a monthly subscription, get over the monthly subscription. My advice is: if you can find a permanently licensed app that you like, great. I understand the gripes about this because I used to gripe about it myself. The monthly subscription thing is a different question. It's the future because being able to access your data from anywhere, from any device, is a major plus. The Cloud is the future of pretty much everything not because some folks in suits with stock in cloud computing are pushing it on us. And if my house is robbed and someone steals ALL of my computers, I have not lost my photos. Plus, my iPhone photos are synced to my Lightroom CC library automatically. I don't have to carry around an external drive. If I edit an image in Lightroom CC on the Dell, next time I view that image on the iMac, the edit is there. I can now access my photos without any special effort from my big iMac, or my Macbook Pro, or my Dell XPS 15, or my iPhone. I have switched from Lightroom Classic to the new Lightroom CC precisely for the cloud storage. I've been thinking about switching from LightRoom to another package, possibly DXO, because I don't want to store images in the cloud or pay a monthly subscription.ĭon't forget that Lightroom Classic does NOT require cloud storage.Īlso may be useful to consider that cloud storage has many advantages. Hybrid models pair a 1.6-liter turbocharged four with an electric motor for 139 horsepower but bring a major boost in torque versus the base 2.0-liter engine with 195 lb-ft combined. Neither quick nor truly slow, the base Elantras are perfectly fine for folks looking for cheap transportation and they aren’t a low-price penalty box. Zero-to-60 comes up in 8.0 seconds or thereabout. This engine is also used in the base Kia Forte, and in both cases, these lower-end models drive pretty well for what they are. Counting the N, there are four powertrains in all, and each is quite different in character.īase SE, SEL and Limited models get the job done-and no more-with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque driving the front wheels through a CVT. Hyundai’s wide-ranging lineup of Elantra trims covers an equally broad range of performance choices. Surprisingly rich materials, solid ergonomics and generous helpings of in-car tech make the Elantra a standout value. All this value makes the Elantra a must-drive for small sedan shoppers. All of this is backed by Hyundai’s lengthy five-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and ten-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranties, which only one competitor (the Kia Forte) can match. Stricter standards at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have cost the Elantra its “Top Safety Pick” status this year, but it still gets very good marks in every area of testing. Hyundai also fits even the lowest-model Elantras with lots of active-safety features, although not quite as many as the Civic or Subaru Impreza. In Hyundai fashion, infotainment tech is beautifully integrated, with user-friendly touchscreen interfaces and intuitive navigation. Models with the optional twin 10.2-inch screens also look especially upscale. The back seat is huge, too, actually having more legroom than Hyundai’s larger Sonata. The cabin feels contemporary and inviting, with its shapely dashboard and strip of discreet, recessed vents. The trunk offers a roomy 14.2 cubic-feet, again on par with some larger sedans, despite a somewhat shallow trunk opening. Apart from the N, the Elantra isn’t as engaging to drive as the Honda or Mazda, but it isn’t bad drive either, and definitely outshines the Corolla or Volkswagen Jetta.Įvery Elantra brings a roomy interior that, like the Civic, feels almost “midsize” in useable space. The N also still offers a manual transmission, while the N-Line no longer does. The pace gets downright blinding with the acclaimed new Elantra N, whose 276-hp turbo four hustles this overachiever from zero-to-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and even offers a 10-hp boost mode. The pace picks up with an Elantra N-Line, powered by a 201-hp turbo four and seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. With four high-value versions, from the cheap-and-cheerful SE to the hot-blooded Elantra N, Hyundai’s affordable 2023 Elantra offers something for everyone. The Blue can’t always reach its EPA-rated 54 combined mpg, but does return around 48 to 50, which is still outstanding. Hybrid models mark the sweet spot in features, economy and performance, starting with the $25,665 Hybrid Blue. Even that version is well-equipped, though the SEL seems well worth its $23,315 MSRP. Shoppers won’t confuse those Elantras with, say, a sportier, more-luxurious Mazda3, but the SE starts at just $22,065, which undercuts most competitors. And if you’re down with the edgy facade, the Elantra’s vast lineup holds appeal for the budget-conscious (in base SE and SEL models), miserly fuel savers (Hybrid Blue and Hybrid Limited versions) and performance junkies, with the 201-horsepower N-Line and a downright ferocious 276-horsepower Elantra N.īase models make do with a mere 147-horsepower four-cylinder engine, hooked to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Yet the Hyundai tends to look more appealing in person than in photographs, so we recommend an up-close inspection. “Style” is in the eye of the beholder, and some observers take issue with the Elantra’s angular shape and a large-mouthed grille that has drawn snarky “catfish” references. The South Korean automaker’s Elantra is a compelling alternative to a more-familiar Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, and provides the widest range of choices of any small sedan. There are just fewer of them these days, but where automakers including Ford and General Motors have chosen to ditch affordable small cars and their fans, Hyundai hasn’t forgotten and has made its compact mainstay a genuine all-star. America’s obsession with SUV and EVs-or electric SUVs-has stolen attention from cars that millions of Americans still put down hard-earned money on: the humble compact sedan. |
